Professional organizations that support reading and writing instruction (e.g., International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, Missouri Council of IRA, Missouri Association of Teachers of English.
Education is a constantly developing field. New practices are continually being put into place and researched to reflect our ever-changing world. Because of this, educators must seek out avenues for professional development related to contemporary research on these new strategies and practices. Organizations such as the International Reading Association, National Council of Teachers of English, Missouri Council of IRA, and Missouri Association of Teachers of English exist to support educators in the pursuit of effective literacy instruction. Such organizations provide members with collaborative opportunities and many supportive resources related to policies, research, and instruction.
The first artifact is the link to the Missouri State Teacher's Association. I am currently a member of this organization. This organization has a strong web presence on their site, blog, Pinterest, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, and Facebook, creating a collaborative community on a wide range of education topics and concerns. They also sponsor a program called the Reading Circle Program, which encourages students to read for pleasure. The second artifact is the link to the International Reading Association's website. This organization offers many resources for literacy teachers such as reading lists, publications (i.e. videos, books, journals, and articles), units and lesson plans, legislative topics, and current research. The third artifact is a power point from a Kindergarten Academy meeting I attended in October, 2014. This is a professional community of Kindergarten teachers who meet once per month to discuss topics related to teaching Kindergarten, often literacy-related. For example, during this meeting, the main focus was Literacy Stations/Centers. These artifacts demonstrate my knowledge of and participation in professional organizations.
