Local, state, and federal policies related to reading and writing instruction and assessment.
Local, state, and federal policies related to reading and writing instruction and assessment affect how educators select and implement curricula. Educators must be knowledgeable of these policies and understand how to take action accordingly to meet the needs of all students. In addition, these policies and regulations are created to promote student achievement and protect the rights of students and families. Therefore, it is imperative that educators adhere to these policies.
The first artifact is Missouri's RTI (Response to Intervention) guidelines from my Assessment and Evaluation in Special Education course. This is an example of a recent movement in education. Once RTI was accepted as an effective, research-based practice, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) created a policy to regulate this process and set standards that all schools must follow. The second artifact is DESE's website, www.dese.mo.gov. The site has a plethora of information about legislation, policies, and contemporary happenings, research, and information related to education in Missouri. The third artifact is the Missouri State Comprehensive Literacy Plan, taken from DESE's website. The plan creates a full picture of literacy education and explains the six core components of literacy development. These artifacts exemplify my competency in identifying sources of policy information and my awareness of them.
