organizing strategies for reading and writing instruction
Think back to the big tree from the Foundations of Language and Literacy page. That tree needed more than just roots to grow into what it is today. It also needed soil, sunlight, and water to give it the proper nourishment to grow. Strategies for teaching literacy are like those elements because they give children the tools they need to develop reading and writing skills. In the same way that certain types of trees can only live in certain climates and in particular types of soil, students have varying learning needs.
Educators must determine which strategies and methods will work best for them and will meed the individual needs of students. It is important for educators to consider a plethora of research-based practices, and try out various instructional approaches to figure out best fits.
